First message sent from UCLA to Stanford. It crashes after "LO". Four nodes, two universities, one military network. The internet is born.

1971
Tomlinson sends the first network email and picks @ to separate user from host. The symbol's fate is sealed forever.

ARPANET switches from NCP to TCP/IP on January 1st. Every machine has to cut over at once. It still carries all internet traffic today.

1989
A CERN physicist files "Information Management: A Proposal." His boss scrawls "Vague but exciting" on the cover. HTML, HTTP, and URLs follow.
